The scandal-ridden Chamber of Accounts, the government?s own accounting office, has accepted to submit itself to a new audit. Nevertheless, there are problems being experienced with the selection of the auditing firm. The judges of the Chamber of Accounts have issued a public call for auditing firms, but Senator Tonty Rutinel says that this is, in itself, illegal. Rutinel stated, as reported in El Caribe newspaper, that according to Article 28 of the law that established the Chamber of Accounts, only the Senate may select, contract and pay for the audits of the accounts office. Rutinel distributed copies of Law 10-04 to the journalists gathered in the Senate offices.
