The much maligned law that was whisked through the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies, only to be returned to Congress by President Mejia in the face of huge public indignation, has undergone even further changes, according to a report in El Caribe. The joint committee is reviewing the changes suggested by the Executive Branch to the Sectoral Protected Areas Bill, according to the president of the committee on natural resources in the Senate, Celeste Gomez (PRD-Santiago Rodriguez). She said that in two weeks the reformed legislation will be ready for a vote. So far, about 50% of the suggested changes have been agreed upon. According to Senator Gomez, only small technical points need to be cleared up, such as the exact limits of the protected areas. In the original piece, several of the park boundaries were left open in some spots, which could potentially lead to great confusion. Another point that is being corrected is the reference to the highest mountain in the Caribbean as ?Pico Trujillo? rather than ?Pico Duarte?, which has been its appellation since 1961.
