Mejia to meet with generators

President Hipolito Mejia said he would meet with the power generators and AES power distributor after a meeting with US Ambassador Hans Hertell and Spanish Ambassador Maria Figa Lopez. The US diplomat backed the business interests of the AES power generation and distribution company, among those of other US companies servicing the power industry here. Figa Lopez has been actively backing the interests of Union Fenosa in the Dominican Republic. As reported in El Caribe, however, Mejia did not specify any date for the meeting. ?Yes, sir, we will meet soon,? Mejia told journalists who asked about the outcome of his meeting with the ambassadors.

President Hipolito Mejia has maintained the position that the government does not owe power suppliers, while the power entities tell quite a different story.

In demand of payment, the private power plants have cut service, causing a deficit of about 50% of national demand.

Finance Minister Rafael Calderon told El Caribe that the government is trying to find a harmonious solution to the conflict so that power service improves soon.
