The Jimani houses

The 300 wooden houses being built by the governmental INVI department as a donation to those left homeless after the floods in Jimani would not stand up to a future tropical storm, say press reports. According to engineer Alexander Holsteinson, members of a commission of the Dominican College of Engineers who investigated the disaster zone say the structures are so fragile they would not withstand the winds of even a tropical storm, much less a hurricane. Holsteinson said that the houses are being erected without any underground foundation and do not have power, potable water or sanitary connections. Furthermore, he said the wood being used is untreated, so the houses will rot in the weather in two years? time.
