All that remains at the primary school at the batey ?Mata los Indios? in the San Luis sugar mill lands is a pile of stones, after the building?s total collapse that killed a young Canadian and injured two Haitians. It could have been worse, since just a few minutes earlier the building was full of children at play. The old schoolhouse was in very poor shape and its roof had caved in some time ago. The batey is located some 14 kilometers from the town of San Luis, in the cane growing area of Santo Domingo East. Misery and poverty are endemic in the area, and most of the population is composed of Haitians brought to harvest the sugar cane, coffee and cacao. Rosali Jimenez, a social worker in the area, told El Nacional reporter Victor Martinez that just minutes before the accident occurred there were 30 children playing in the old building. She said that locals had warned the Haitian representative of the Canadian NGO Mostar, Joseph Querubi, that the building was unsafe, but his response was that the Haitians had not come to the DR to proffer opinions on construction, but rather to cut sugar cane. Although the 18-year-old Canadian, Jacques Rosussin, was afraid of heights, his efforts to help people were of greater importance. At the time of his death Rosussin was on a ladder and was crushed when the building?s wall gave way. There are four other Canadians working on the project.
