At least 12 wounded were reported by La Informacion newspaper from Santiago as a result of fiery protests over the cost of living, the continual blackouts and the lack of drinking water. The communities of Navarrete, Villa Gonzalez, San Francisco de Macoris and Cotui were shaken by gunfire, firebombs and burning tires. The 12 injured were hit by bullets and shotgun pellets. Dozens of people have been jailed in relation to the disturbances. According to the paper, the protests were spurred by the increased intensity of the blackouts, causing the irritation over the general situation to overflow. In the neighborhoods of Los Ciruelitos, San Martin, Hermanas Mirabal and Pueblo Nuevo, hooded young men took potshots at police. Hoy newspaper reports that the entire eastern portion of the country experienced 24-hour power outages in various areas over the past two days as a result of the AES-Andres decision to cut its electric supply because of a lack of fuel. With demand for electricity varying between 1500 and 1800MW, production is falling severely short at 800MW. People living along the Las Americas Highway reported 24-hour blackouts. Areas of Santo Domingo proper, such as the upscale area of Gazcue, reported 12- to 14-hour outages. On the positive side, EGE-Haina was able to augment its output to 236MW and the hydroelectric plants were able to increase production during peak hours. So, too, did Palamera which attained 80MW and La Vega which reached 55.2MW.
