Phone service restored for President

The phone lines, fax and Internet service at the Presidential Palace were reconnected on Sunday morning, after all service, even to the President?s office, had been suspended on Friday afternoon. Eduardo Varcacel, spokesman for Verizon, told El Caribe that the situation at the governmental headquarters was rectified after a partial payment was made on the RD$50-million debt owed by the government to Verizon, but no amount was specified.

Only recently did the Ministry of Education have its telephone service restored after months of being incommunicado due to a RD$40-million debt with Verizon. Telecommunications services were reconnected at the Ministry of Education only recently when the government reportedly made good on half of the sum owed.
