Colonel Pascual Cruz Mendez, the director of operations at the Metropolitan Transport Authority (AMET), told El Caribe newspaper that they are finishing up road signage in the area of Independence Park to facilitate pedestrian crossings and reduce accidents. The streets that border the park and Conde Gate were adequately painted to indicate to those on foot where they should cross. Colonel Cruz said that a second phase will include 16 de Agosto St, at Av. Bolivar, another area where accidents are frequent.
The AMET officer said they would also improve street signage at Km 9 of the Duarte Highway, at the intersection Winston Churchill and Gustavo Mejia Ricart St, and Nunez de Caceres streets, other dangerous areas for pedestrians. He said they would be filling potholes on 30 de Marzo, from the intersection of Bolivar to San Martin Av. Potholes will also be repaired along Isabel Aguiar avenue in Herrera. Cruz commented that on the 30 de Marzo Street there are 40 potholes, converting the avenue into a veritable obstacle course and true torture on which to travel. The 30 de Marzo leads up to the Presidential Palace.
Cruz explained that the work is being carried out in conjunction with the Ministry of Public Works and the city governments of the National District and the Province of Santo Domingo. He said that the Ministry of Public Works is supplying the asphalt and laborers to fill the street holes.
