Dominicans need to watch the sun

A leading dermatologist is warning that most Dominicans ignore the damage the sun can cause the skin. Sonia Read, who works at the Dr. Humberto Bogaert Institute of Dermatology and Surgery, says that Dominicans are unaware of what the sun does to the skin. The dangers go from ?day-after burns? to pre-mature aging and skin cancers. According to the doctor, people only go to the institute after they have begun experiencing problems, forgetting that skin damage is cumulative. Long-time exposure creates ever greater dangers. While skin color, eye color and genetics can play a role in the damage done, nobody is exempt from the risk, including the photo-types four, five and six, which are the ?olive-skinned Mediterranean types, the mulattos and the blacks who have some natural protection.? Doctor Read reminds her patients that there are no sun blocks that are 100% effective, and that the eyes, too, must be protected. According to the Diario Libre, the doctor was especially firm in her reference to the need to begin protection during infancy, when the skin is so much more sensitive to the sun?s harsh rays.
