Justice lags behind

The president of the National Council of Business, Elena Viyella de Paliza, says that judicial action against corruption is lagging and is a matter of concern and cause for discouragement in Dominican society. As reported in Hoy newspaper, Viyella commented on statements by visiting Under Secretary for International Affairs of the US Treasurry John Taylor who mentioned that the international financial community wants to see justice done regarding the case of those responsible for the bank collapse. Viyella urged the elimination of corruption, saying that it is responsible that taxes paid do not go to make significant improvements in the health and education services, at a time when the nation is plagued by blackouts, lack of medical supplies at hospitals and working Dominicans have seen their buying power cut in half. She urged that government spending be controlled. She said that while the business sector is aware they have to share the burden, they are demanding that the reform be integral, that the state become more modern and reduce its size so that services to the population improve, and government collections improve and become more efficient.
