And now the garbage bill…

Over the past four years, Dominican consumers have suffered considerable increases of their electricity and water bills. The increases have coincided with the partial privatization of the services. Now the Municipality of Santo Domingo joins suit and the start of the privatization of garbage collection services, brings higher prices for consumers. El Caribe newspaper reports the case of one condominium that after paying a regular fee of RD$1,362 for the service, last month got a bill for RD$6,300 following privatization. AAA Dominicana, the same company in charge of collections for the water service, has the concession to oversee collections of bills for garbage collection. Consumers living in condominiums, say that there needs to be an adjustment when not all the apartments are occupied. They say it is not fair to bill a building for 20 apartments, if only 10 are occupied.

El Caribe reports that the charge per apartment is up to RD$200.
