Trickledown effect of tourism in Santo Domingo

The president of the Santo Domingo Association of Hotels, Robert Grisi, said that tourism to the city of Santo Domingo generates more than US$330 million a year. This is the result of 240,000 visitors, according to Grisi, which makes up 9% of the total flow of visitors to the DR during the year.
?Visitors to the city, because of its characteristics, generate a greater distribution of activities outside the hotels,? said Grisi during an audiovisual presentation of the new Santo Domingo Hotel Association to the press at the Hotel Embajador.
Grisi explained that 75% of the 240,000 visitors were in the country for business reasons, while 17% came for cultural reasons, 9% for meetings and conventions and 8% for religious, sport or other activities.
As reported in Hoy newspaper, the general manager of the Jaragua Renaissance Hotel explained that Santo Domingo contributes 10.6% of the hard currency generated by travel to the country, as shown in a statistical analysis conducted by the Central Bank.
Santo Domingo has about 4,000 hotel rooms in 42 hotels, or 7% of the country?s hotel room inventory.
