One of the rare, honest public servants, lawyer Jorge Martinez Lavandier, died yesterday at the age of 82. The man who was on three occasions appointed the director of Customs and once the director of Income Tax (during Balaguer administrations) ended his days in abject poverty. Martinez Lavandier is survived by his wife Musseta Nicolas and his children Gina, Jorge, Victor and Katia. At the inception of the current PRD government, President Mejia decreed that the former official be given a pension in order to help pay for his medical bills.
