On Monday, the DR1 News reported the detention of 31 Cubans who were about to make the dangerous voyage to Puerto Rico in a small craft. Things apparently became complicated, however. Siquio NG, the head of Immigration, told reporters that he had no information on the case and today?s El Caribe tells the story of how only eight of the 31 Cubans have been arraigned. San Pedro de Macoris? District Attorney has reportedly requested to know the whereabouts of the remaining 23 would-be illegal travellers. Aris Palmero was emphatic when he told reporters that his office was not a repository for poorly executed paperwork. Nonetheless, he submitted the eight Cubans and the lone Dominican for arraignment. The documents sent by the Navy and the Attorney General did not account for the other 23 Cubans, and this visibly bothered the San Pedro District Attorney. Palmero demanded an explication from the legal council for the Navy, the assistant DA assigned to the Navy and from the Attorney General himself, as to why they built up a file without consulting his office, since the entire case is clearly within his jurisdiction. Palmero demanded that the Navy hand over the entire group of Cubans. The location of the remaining 23 has not been clarified, and the local District Attorney said that the eight who are being arraigned were ?chosen at random? and are alleged to be the people in charge of the journey. ?I am not a trafficker,? said Gilberto Clark, who arrived in the DR seven months ago. ?I am a doctor from Havana, and I paid US$2,000 and RD$38,000 for the trip.? According to sources among the eight Cubans being tried, the entire group was kept for a week at the house of an official from the Passport Office, who was allegedly the organizer for the trip. To illustrate the situation of the Cubans, El Caribe reports that one 20-year-old Cuban national died inside the landing gear of an LTU flight to Dusseldorf. While the flight originated in Cuba, it did make a stop in Punta Cana, and German authorities feel certain that the stowaway gained access to the plane in the Dominican Republic.
