Former Colombian President Ernesto Samper is currently visiting Santo Domingo, where he will present his book ?The Global Leap: Challenges of Latin America and Globalization? at the Fundacion Global Democracia y Desarrollo. As reported in Diario Libre, the book investigates the possible causes for political destabilization in Latin America that are the product of democratic governance. Samper refers to the need for a new Latin American paradigm of development backed by competitiveness and equity. He bases his proposal on various reflections on technology, education, investment, information sharing and infrastructure, and says the four main challenges are to ensure democratic governance, improve the levels of equity, strengthen competitiveness and regain lost identity.
