Given that the normal route to Constanza is being affected by landslides, especially at Casabito, the Public Works Ministry has announced that heavy-truck traffic making the journey is to be diverted to the road from Jarabacoa. This is a longer route, however, and several sections of this road are also in bad condition as it has only had light repairs made to it since it was built over 50 years ago. Leo Herandez of the Ministry of Public Works told El Caribe newspaper that the government would need RD$14 million to fix the problems in the Casabito area. Meanwhile, the longer route trucks drivers need take will considerably increase the cost of moving produce from Constanza to Santo Domingo.
El Caribe reports that the distance from Santo Domingo to Constanza is 140 kilometers, while the route by way of Jarabacoa increases it to 203 kilometers, or 63 additional kilometers.
