President Mejia in denial

With reports abounding on the crisis situation at the nation?s hospitals, President Hipolito Mejia rebuffed the notion that these public services had collapsed. Mejia, who visited the Padre Billini Hospital in Ciudad Nueva yesterday, said that the problems at the medical facilities are owed to the fact that he would not implement the ?immorality? of a wage increase for physicians during this governmental transition period. ?The pressure is on me to increase the wages before the new administration starts, but it would be immoral of me to do so,? said the outgoing statesman.

Referring to the propane gas and diesel scarcity, Mejia similarly denied the veracity of reports, saying the shortage was ?artificial.? In an interview with the press, and as reported in Hoy newspaper, Mejia said the situation was ?all talk? and that ?there was no such problem.?

Regarding the power problems, President Mejia has said the government does not owe a cent. Meanwhile, Dominicans are subject to the longest series of blackouts since 1990.
