Leon Jimenes proposal a hit

The powerful Leon Jimenes Group spoke before the Finance Commission of the Chamber of Deputies and the response has been fairly unanimous: Good thinking! The Listin Diario says the proposal had garnered large support in Congress and its straightforward solutions to many of the current fiscal and social problems are being seen as viable. Senate president Jesus Vasquez praised the statements made yesterday and was joined by the leader of the lower house, Alfredo Pacheco. Representatives from the three leading political parties also joined in to applaud the models and solutions proposed by the leading business group in the Dominican Republic. One dissenting voice, however, was heard from Rafael Camilo, part of the PLD?s transition team, as he dismissed the proposals as being merely ?administrative suggestions and not part of the law being discussed.? Camilo wrote off the suggestions from ANJE, the Industrial Association and the Leon Jimenes Group by qualifying them as ?aspects that can be considered alongside the tax reform legislation.? The former head of the National Planning Office (ONAPLAN) said that the various proposals are complementary, but cannot enter into the tax reform legislation because, as an example, the idea to improve tax collections and to restructure public expenditures are administrative aspects that do not fall into the scope of the legislation. To top things off, the Leon Jimenes Group published a two-page paid announcement of their entire proposal in all of today?s newspapers, including the Diario Libre, which is free to the public.
