Hernani ploy causes rift in PRD

Vice-President Milagros Ortiz Bosch said that she did not like the fast-tracked deal that put the coordinator for State Projects, Hernani Salazar, into the Senate to replace an ailing Senator Julio Machado. Ortiz Bosch was rather abrupt when she commented on the designation of the PPH leader to the Senate seat, saying simply, ?I didn?t like it.? Ortiz Bosch said that the appointment of the new senator was not sent to the PRD political commission for approval, despite the fact that they were meeting last Tuesday night. PRD president Vicente Sanchez Baret and vice-presidential candidate Rafael Subervi Bonilla put up a trio of possible candidates that included the head of the Immigration Department, Siquio Ng de la Rosa and the head of the Postal Service, Luis Ernesto Camilo Garcia. Ortiz Bosch said she felt that the political commission of the party should have been advised of the nominations. As a former senator for the National District and the president of the Senate Commission on Justice, the outgoing VP felt that the decision to name Salazar to the Senate was based on biases both personal and party-related. Salazar is known to be one of the closest associates of President Mejia and the point-man on the Constitutional amendment that was pushed through the Congress to permit a re-election bid by the President.
