The OMSA bus service is paralyzed for lack of funds to pay suppliers and the fuel bills, causing 700 of its buses to sit idle. Hoy reports that one source said that Diogenes Castillo, the head of Metropolitan Office of Bus Service (OMSA), was able to obtain a small quantity of fuel, but the source could not say how much. He did say that the fuel would arrive today, Friday and service is expected to return to normalcy on Saturday. OMSA owes RD$20 million to its fuel suppliers, and, as of yesterday, Castillo?s efforts to find the money at the National Palace were unsuccessful. The government subsidizes 50% of the cost of public transport in Santo Domingo and in Santiago de los Caballeros. According to the source, the OMSA buses could only work until noon yesterday. The unnamed official pointed out that only 50 vehicles were in service at that time ? seven more than had been on the roads on Wednesday. Private bus companies are supplying transport for the thousands of passengers who rely on the service to get to work and move about the city. Hoy reporters said that all of the buses that they saw were full to the doors.
