Four Dominican medalists from the Santo Domingo Pan American Games and one gold medalist in the Olympic pre-trial competitions will comprise the Dominican boxing team in Athens. The boxers aspire to repeat Pedro Julio Nolasco?s feat in 1984, when he took bronze, the DR?s first and only Olympic medal.
El Caribe newspaper carries a report on the boxing team, concluding that the team?s strong suit is its ?heart?. The weak point of the team, says El Caribe, is its lack of preparation for international competitions.
The boxing team?s captain, Juan Jose Ubaldo, was the gold medalist at the most recent Pan American Games in the 75-kilo category, and is also a veteran of the Sydney Olympic Games. Other boxers are Juan Carlos Payano (51 kilos), Argenis Mendez (54 kilos), Felix Diaz (60 kilos) and Isidro Mosquea (64 kilos).
Boxing is scheduled to take place in Athens from 14-29 August.
