Tourist bound for Jamaica sent to DR

Some 2,000 British tourists bound for Jamaica were rerouted to resorts in the Dominican Republic. Tourists that would have vacationed in Jamaica, and others that were in Jamaica were flown out to the DR. Aerodom, that manages the Puerto Plata and Las Americas international airports, assisted the tour operators by reducing airport fees.

The plus side of storms being in September is that the month is the low season for the tourism industry, and thus there is time to clean up and fix up in time for the start of the winter season, as November comes closer. This should be the case for hotels in Bahamas, Jamaica, the Cayman Islands and areas in Cuba. This happened in the DR in 1998 when Category 3 Georges, hit, primarily affecting eastern hotels. While landscaping is definitely affected and takes longer to return to normal, in many cases, the insurance money can prove to be a bonanza for a property that needed renovations.
