Traffic back over Chavon River

The construction of a provisional causeway over the Chavon River represents good news for drivers and signifies the return to normalcy in the eastern region of the country. The bridge that originally spanned the Chavon River crossing collapsed on 16 September due to the excess waters delivered by Hurricane Jeanne. Since that time the easterly flow of traffic from La Romana city to Bayahibe and Punta Cana was seriously hindered, as was traffic from Punta Cana in the other direction. The Ministry of Public Works, in conjunction with the Central Romana company, built the causeway to ease traffic delays over the Chavon River. This eliminated the ordeal of the alternate detour and the business of the ferry that conveyed cars over the river for several weeks, prompting long lineups and a RD$500 fee.

The restoration of the bridge enables those arriving by way of the La Romana International Airport to travel easily to the Bayahibe or Punta Cana areas. It also enables tourists staying in Punta Cana and Bayahibe/Dominicus areas to visit La Romana’s attractions, such as Altos de Chavon.
