The excess weight represented by the thousands of unnecessary government jobs has remained unchanged since the new administration came to power. According to the Central Bank’s third-quarter report, the Fernandez administration has only eliminated 2,320 jobs from its estimated excess of more than 150,000 posts. El Caribe newspaper reports that as of 31 September, this figure represented a reduction of only 0.72% and clashed with President Fernandez’s inaugural speech, in which he said he would cut government spending by 20% and implement austerity.
The Central Bank’s January-September report shows that 320,558 people were employed by the government, compared to 322,278 in June of this year.
