Gigantes win game one

The Gigantes del Cibao (San Francisco de Macoris) won the first of nine games scheduled for the round robin of the Dominican Winter Professional League championship that began on Sunday, 2 January. The game between the Tigres del Licey and Aguilas Cibaenas had to be suspended due to the constant rains in Santiago. Some 20,000 fans had purchased games for that opening match, which was postponed for Friday, 7 January. The all-against-all series continues today with games scheduled between the Gigantes and the Licey in Santo Domingo, and the Aguilas and Estrellas in San Pedro de Macoris. On Tuesday, the Gigantes will match the Aguilas in Santiago, and the Licey goes against the Estrellas in San Pedro de Macoris. On Wednesday, the Licey matches the Aguilas in Santiago, and the Estrellas the Gigantes in San Francisco de Macoris. Thursday games are the Estrellas against the Aguilas in Santiago and the Licey vs. the Gigantes in San Francisco de Macoris.

The Gigantes were the surprise runner-up team in the regular season, placing three games behind the Aguilas. The Estrellas ended in third place, four games behind and the Licey filled the important fourth place some 4.5 games behind.
