Foreign Relations Minister Carlos Morales Troncoso said that the Dominican Republic would give its vote to the Central American consensus candidate for secretary general of the Organization of American States. The post became vacant when Costa Rican President Abel Pacheco asked Rodriguez, a former Costa Rican President, to resign from his post and return to Costa Rica to explain to judicial authorities his involvement in a corruption scandal only weeks after taking office as secretary general.
Morales Troncoso said that if a consensus for a Central American candidate is not reached amidst Central American nations, the DR would then consider the candidates from Chile, Jose Miguel Insulza and Mexico, Luis Ernesto Derbez. The Foreign Relations Minister of Chile recently visited to lobby for the Chilean candidate.
