Baseball: Licey wins thriller

A dramatic tenth inning homerun by Jose Herrera gave the Tigres del Licey their sixth victory in game nine game of the round robin tournament. Batting as a pinch hitter, Herrera came of the bench to seal the see-saw game. The Estrellas, playing in their home park, took a one run lead in the very first inning. Led by pitcher Esteban Yan, the Estrellas held the powerful Licey team to just one run in five innings. However, the Estrellas could not score any more runs off of Vladimir Nunez who threw five and a third innings giving up just seven hits but only one run, while striking out five. Licey tied the game in the fifth inning, and that is the way it stayed until the eighth, when first Licey and then the Estrellas scored a run. With nobody scoring in the ninth inning, the game went into extra innings. After two outs, relief pitcher Matt Beech came in to pitch to pinch hitter Jose Herrera. Herrera greeted him with a home run that proved to be the game winner.

The game between the Gigantes of San Francisco de Macoris and the Aguilas Cibaenas in the Estadio Cibao in Santiago was postponed because of rain. It was rescheduled for tonight at eight o’clock.
