European donation for Santo Domingo

Mayor Roberto Salcedo has signed an agreement for RD$9 million in European Union funding for eight programs that will work for the “strengthening, reform and modernization of the city government of Santo Domingo. The programs also aim to improve the municipality’s auditing and internal controls.

The project includes a contribution that will be used for a public awareness campaign in Santo Domingo. Some RD$3 million will go to an educational campaign to raise awareness among residents of the importance of a litter- free city, to promote pride about living in barrios, and to create an awareness of civic values. The reporter wonders if the day may come when the citizens of Santo Domingo refrain from throwing garbage on city streets and avenues.

The European Union’s development fund office (ONFED) will also provide RD$200 million for the Saneamiento Ambiental de los Barrios Marginados de Santo Domingo (SABAMAR) program that seeks to improve slum barrios in the city.
