Support urged for Haiti

Foreign Minister Carlos Morales Troncoso addressed the United Nations Security Council yesterday to call on the international community to make a greater commitment to Haiti. He highlighted that the greatest commitment that is needed is that which will lead to the reconciliation of Haitian society, so that its leaders may move from confrontation to cooperation. He called for international efforts that would contribute to the economic reconstruction of Haiti, to alleviate the overwhelming poverty, that is an extreme example of survival amidst age-old social injustices and a territory in advanced state of deforestation. He spoke of the need for a long term commitment that guarantee massive, timely and sustained aid from the developed nations of the world and solidarity that needs to be greater than the size of Haiti’s problems. The meeting of the Security Council was convened by Argentina, which holds the rotating presidency of the United Nations deliberation body.
