Trying again with Majluta Avenue

The late former President Jacobo Majluta has not been allowed to rest in peace. A four-lane avenue, bordering a northern section of Santo Domingo, was named in his memory. Per kilometer, however, it is by far the most costly highway ever built in the Dominican Republic. The Fernandez administration announced that another RD$630 million would be poured into the avenue. Official figures indicate that this would bring the total cost of the deteriorating 6.48-kilometer thoroughfare up to RD$1.05 billion.

The avenue was inaugurated in 1997, a year into the first Fernandez administration, and suffered from major structural problems from the start.

The Ministry of Public Works said that it guarantees the thoroughfare will not suffer from premature deterioration this time around because they will use quality materials and eight inch asphalt paving.
