Why don’t prices go down?

The hope that the peso’s recovery would lead to a decline in prices has become but A “Midsummer Night’s Dream,” as reported in Diario Libre today. While some prices have indeed gone down, some have stayed at the same levels as when the dollar was at RD$55 on the exchange market. Pasta has even increased in price, for no apparent reason. A nice hot cup of coffee is still expensive, in spite of the fact that the dollar has gone under the RD$30 peso mark. The National Union of Economic Supermarkets reports that detergents, toothpaste, and canned goods are still being sold for inexplicably high prices. The supermarket survey found that while the higher prices for locally grown foods, such as plantains, yucca and beans is understandable due to the recent rains and flooding, the higher prices for pasta is not. The UNASE questions why prices for toothpaste, detergents and soaps are at the same prices as when the dollars was worth RD$55 pesos.
