This week, the municipality of Santo Domingo is beginning improvement works to Santo Domingo’s Duarte Avenue commercial district. 526 informal street vendors, out of a total of 600 are being relocated. The Plaza de Buhoneros (street vendors plaza) is being renovated and pedestrian walkways for the sale of textiles, music and books will be incorporated. Several signs are being taken down. The plan has the support of the Duarte Avenue Traders Association and the city of Santo Domingo. A Chinatown area will be part of the project. Architect Kalil Michell of the Ministry of Public Works is overseeing the project for the government department and architect Edmundo Garcia is in charge. Mayor Roberto Salcedo and Manolo Fernandez, president of the Duarte Traders Association, announced the start of works. Salcedo informed that the sidewalks would be widened, and modern kiosks installed at 20-meter intervals. He said that the Chinatown district would be ready by the end of the year.
