The head of the Tax Department, Juan Hernandez, urged property owners of homes, lots and commercial locations to voluntarily declare their property within the terms established by the law. He said very few have come forward so far. He explained that his department seeks to legitimize society, where the taxpayer establishes the worth of his property, adjusted by inflation for tax purposes. He said that taxpayers should visit the web site of the department at http://www.dgii.gov.do where they will find a table to calculate the estimated values of property nationwide. He said that the taxpayers that do not voluntarily declare their property would be subject to the DGII making the estimates and establishing the taxes to be paid. Juan Hernandez is optimistic about tax collections this year. He said that January collections are RD$800 million more than the same month in 2004. He said that in the first 15 days of the month, the DGII collected RD$3.2 billion, a record amount for the department. On the 20th alone, RD$1.8 billion was paid in ITBIS, which confirms that the institution has regained public credibility. He said that they expect to collect RD$6 billion in January.
