BASEBALL: Aguilas get closer to crown

Huge headlines in all of today’s Sports Sections tell of the “humiliating” defeat of the Tigres del Licey at the hands of the Aguilas Cibaenas at the Quisqueya Stadium last night. In a chock-full ballpark, divided fairly evenly between the fans in blue (Licey) and the fans in yellow (Aguilas), the visiting team from Santiago walloped Licey 11-3. Major league stars, Bernie Castro, Luis Polonia and Miguel Tejada and future star Felix Martinez led an 18 hit attack against the rather hapless pitching staff of Licey. Tejada had a great night, going 4-6 including a home run and accounted for four of the visitor’s runs. The Aguilas got off to a good start again with Vladimir Nunez. Bernie Castro, Luis Polonia and Alex Fernandez prepared the way for Edwin Encarnacion to get a two-run single, giving the Aguilas a 2-0 lead to start the game. Licey, one of the Dominican Republic’s all-time powerhouses, and winner of more Caribbean Series than any other Dominican team, pulled even in the bottom half of the inning. A Miguel Tejada throwing error put Luis Castillon on second. A long fly-ball to center moved Castillo to third, and he scored on a Jose Offerman hit to center. Jose Guillen got another hit and that was followed by a third hit by Jose Herrera, scoring Offerman from third. Guillen was out trying to reach third base and the inning ended 2-2. The Aguilas scored the winning run in the following inning with hits by Felix Martinez, Bernie Castro Miguel Tejada and Matt Cepicky. 4-2 Aguilas. The Aguilas also scored in the fifth, sixth, seventh and ninth innings, never letting Licey get too close. Tonight the Tigres del Licey travel to Santiago, where the Cibao Stadium is known as the “Valley of Death” for visiting teams. A victory tonight will give the Aguilas their 18th national title, and would mean that many people in the entire region will wake up Saturday a bit sleep-deprived. Game time is 8:00pm. The game will be transmitted live on local and cable channels, and ESPN is also carrying live broadcasts in Spanish.
