Today’s papers report that even the Cardinal has something to say about the behavior of the capital’s Lincoln Avenue revelers. Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez said that the obstruction of traffic, drinking, drug taking and much publicized sexual exhibitionism along the now notorious thoroughfare “has no place in a civilized society”. He called on the authorities to find a solution to this problem. “There is a lot of violence, and lack of control which has no place in a civilized society, with young people drinking, exhibitionism and all sorts of outrages”. He added that while these problems were a concern, they did not apply to the majority of young people in the Dominican Republic. These declarations were part of the Cardinal’s National Youth Day address, during which the religious leader also called on the nation’s youth to “develop values of respect, spiritual purity and respect for others”.
