Few tourists have heard of, let alone visited, the eastern province of Monte Plata. This morning Hoy newspaper reveals its scenic secrets. Monte Plata is in a perfect position to offer eco-tourism opportunities thanks to the natural beauty of its scenery and resources such as rivers and waterfalls. In addition, the area boasts historical sites like the Cathedral in the city of Bayaguana, which is celebrating its 400th anniversary this year. Monte Plata’s inhabitants are beginning to develop the eco-tourism potential in the shape of ecological campsites, designated bathing areas and crafts workshops. The province is also home to fascinating folk celebrations of religious festivals, which combine Catholicism with indigenous and African traditions. If Monte Plata were to take off as an eco-tourism destination the local economy would benefit greatly. According to the reporter it currently depends mostly on state sector jobs.
