The National Chief of Police, Manuel de Jesus Perez Sanchez, has expressed his determination to fight crime, and reminded the public that this was a commitment shared by everyone. Perez Sanchez said that “in comparison with what is happening in other countries, security levels here are good”. The police chief was interviewed in El Caribe, and was asked about the rumors about discontent within the police force. He denied that his leadership was the subject of a “boycott” by his department. A lawyer by profession, Manuel de Jesus Perez Sanchez has served in the police force for 25 years. He went on to describe the role of the police as “human rights promoters. Their job is to protect the victim”. The police chief acknowledged the presence of corrupt officials within the force, but insisted that they were in a small minority: “A police officer is a serious, honorable and hardworking man or woman. There are people who manage to work in this institution who perhaps should not be here, but luckily bad does not prevail”.
