This morning’s press is critical of the lenient sentence passed on former air force officer Jose Nazario Jiminian who was found guilty of murdering his 19-year old wife. She was found shot dead, and it was established that her husband’s gun was used in the killing. The couple had two small children. Magistrate Katia Gomez German sentenced him to just two years in prison, and imposed a fine of RD$100 for the crime. The prosecuting attorney had asked for a 20-year prison term. The dead woman’s mother described the penalty as “unacceptable” and called on the Supreme Court to review the case. She said that this type of sentence could only encourage further violence against women.
