Two photo-journalists, Adriano Rosario and Joel Alcantara, who work for the Listin Diario and El Caribe newspapers, were victims of verbal and physical attacks by AMET agents yesterday. They were covering the protest by car and motorcycle drivers against AMET’s policy of towing or hauling away defective vehicles, and those belonging to people without driving licenses. Rosario displayed a large bruise on his left cheek and his camera was destroyed. Alcantara was taken into custody by the officers, and beaten on the hands and sides. His pants were ripped and his camera damaged. Photographs of the aggressive officers are printed in today’s Listin Diario. Ironically, both reporters were on their way to a press conference about the construction of the new Dario Contreras Hospital, when they happened upon the drivers’ protest. Alcantara was stopped by AMET agents, accused of running a red light. Well-known journalist Itania Maria, who was in the car with Alcantara, insisted that this was not the case. Both newspapers have lodged complaints against AMET.
