The authorities are searching for a well-known businessman from Barahona in connection with the case of accused drug smuggler Quirino Paulino Castillo, as reported in yesterday’s DR1 news. The case involving 1,387 kilograms of cocaine has brought the name of Ernesto Bienvenido Guevara Diaz, alias “Maconi”, to the forefront of the investigation. National District prosecutor Jose Hernandez identified Maconi as one of the two people, described as fugitives, who are being sought by the justice system. He is accused of involvement in the cocaine deal intercepted by DNCD agents in December. This morning’s papers reveal more details about “Maconi” and his activities. The businessman has properties in San Cristobal and Barahona, including a farm in Enriquillo that he purchased from a PRSC legislator and land that he bought from a judge in Barahona. Also listed among his properties are an avocado farm in Paraiso, and a building in Barahona. Guevara Diaz also has two all-terrain trucks that are used to go off-road in the mountains, according to El Caribe.
