Poultry producers lowered the price of chicken to RD$14 per pound, a price cut of RD$3.50. Due to a large increase in fertile eggs imports in November and December, farmers have more chickens compared to the usual demand for February. Dionnis Fernandez, a poultry farm group spokesperson, confirmed that prices could have gone even lower, but that farmers had decided to stabilize their price at RD$14 per pound for the moment. This price was set to protect future production, which is estimated at 13 million birds. According to the spokesperson, current poultry production is overweight, and this represents a serious economic problem for the farmers. According to Fernandez, the pricing issues come as a result of the government’s commitment to guarantee poultry for the Christmas season, which allowed five million fertile eggs to be imported and pushed poultry production to 17 million units in the face of extraordinary demand. Current demand is far below those levels.
