DR1 forum posters are skeptical about the goal of building 10 kilometers of subway for US$327 million being achieved in three or four years, as proposed by Metro Minister Diandino Pena. As quoted in the thread, similar stretches under construction in Paris and Amsterdam have costs of EUR1 billion each, three times more than the proposal for the local metro.
Dominicans remember that the last mega-project proposed for the country, the Pan American Games facilities, received the approval of President Leonel Fernandez when it was claimed that the cost would be RD$500 million. The total bill when the project was completed is estimated to have been around RD$8 billion.
