The Senate passed a modification to the Electoral Law that will improve the DR’s political parties’ finances in two consecutive readings yesterday. The bill redistributes the funds awarded to politicians from taxpayers’ money. The bill had already been passed by the Chamber of Deputies and thus now passes to the Executive Branch for President Fernandez’s signature. The Electoral Law is modified to establish that 80% of revenues will be distributed in equal parts among the parties that obtain 5% of the valid votes. Likewise, 12% will be distributed to organizations that accumulate less than 5% of the vote and 8% to new political movements. The bill establishes that there will be funding in electoral and non-electoral years.
