A Dominican doctor who served eight years in the US Army Reserve but had resigned last April, received a notice in August that he was up for an 18- to 24-month stint in Iraq, as reported in El Caribe. He fought the notice in court and won his case. Jose Mendez is a pediatrician in Woodside, Queens, in New York City. He told the court that he could lose his family, his clinic and possibly even his life during service in Iraq. Upon winning his case Dr. Mendez received an honorable discharge certificate from the Army. His lawyer Stuart P. Stonick told reporters that what made the case successful was not the date of the doctor’s resignation from the Reserves, but rather the fact that his absence from the clinic, where he is a key staff member, would deprive 3,000 patients of adequate medical care.
