The environmental prosecutor, David La Hoz, has asked that several Mejia government officials linked to the rockash import scandal be banned from leaving the country. On the list are former environment minister Frank Moya Pons, former customs directors Vicente Sanchez Baret, and former port authority director Arsenio Borges. He also called for the arrest of former environmental manager and deputy environment minister Rene Ledesma, former governor of Samana Amada Manzueta, former mayor of Manzanillo Rafael Guzman Torres, the president of Trans Dominicana de Desarrollo Antonio Rosario and company executives Hector Manuel Evert and Oneximo Gonzalez, as reported in the Listin Diario. He accuses them of allowing the rockash import, the waste from coal-fueled power plant operation, which was irregularly deposited in Manzanillo in the northwest and Samana in the northeast. The material, which is said to be toxic, has been blamed for several deaths and diseases, and its importation was in violation of Environment Law 64-00.
At the same time, as reported in the Listin Diario, the environmental prosecutor for the northwest Ramon Aristides Madera Arias ordered Trans Dominicana de Desarrollo to remove the industrial waste from the port in Manzanillo.
