Metro Minister Diandino Pena, the man behind the subway project, told Hoy newspaper reporters that it would be President Leonel Fernandez who decides whether or not the project would see the light of day. According to the engineer of the fly-ways on the 27 of February avenue and several other mega-projects during the first Fernandez administration, once the President hears all of the opinions regarding the Metro system, it will be up to him to make the final decision on the construction of a 10 km first north-south line that Pena says could cost US$370 million.
Pena pointed out that the President, after listening to all of the opinions, must also weigh the political cost of such a project. Speaking to the Corripio Communications Group, Pena outlined the project and emphasized the importance of such a project for a nation closing in on modernity. After the public opinions are heard the President will meet with the Government Council, where, according to the minister, there is a political ingredient that is weighing heavily on the project at this time.
