Veto on politicians’ fund allotments

President Leonel Fernandez vetoed and returned to the Senate the bill that modifies the Electoral Law and sets new guidelines for distributing taxpayer money to support political parties. In his statement, President Fernandez criticized that the funds be allotted indiscriminately to any party that obtained at least 5% of the electoral vote. In the past, funds were allotted depending on the number of votes obtained in the most recent election. President Fernandez considers that the original law is more adjusted to reality. The PRD-majority congress, with the vote of the PRSC, approved to equal fund contributions to all parties. This means that the PRSC, that received 8% of the vote, would receive the same funding as the PLD, that received 57% and the PRD that received 33%. Fernandez said that the rushed bill that modifies the Electoral Law was not discussed by the parties in the Central Electoral Board before it being rushed through Congress. Yesterday, the president of the JCE, Luis Arias, announced his support to the modifications made to the law.
