President Leonel Fernandez announced he would no longer veto the changes the opposition majority Congress made to the Electoral Law. Congress modified the law earlier this month to accommodate funding to their interests. The law now awards equal the funding to all political parties that had received more than 5% of the vote in the past election. In the past, the law ordered that taxpayer money be distributed according to number of votes received in the most recent election. In the 2004 election, the PRD received 33% of the vote, the PRSC 8% of the vote, in contrast to the government party that received 57%. In the 2002 and 2000 elections, the PRD was the majority party. The law also orders that funding be allotted every year, not just in electoral years.
Reportedly, President Leonel Fernandez instructed legal advisor Cesar Pina Toribio to send a notice to the president of the Senate, Andres Bautista, revoking his veto to the law passed last week.
