The Senate passed the Real Estate Registration Bill. The president of the Supreme Court of Justice in January had urged approval of the bill, given that the Inter-American Development Bank had already advanced almost 70% of the RD$34 million project. The program seeks to ensure the legality of property, which is the foundation for foreign investment. The bill replaces legislation that has been in place sicne 1947, as well as the Torrens system that dates back to 1920. Senator Enriquillo Reyes, president of the special commission that reviewed the bill, explained that the bill would end the inefficiency, lack of security and delays in registration of land titles. The Chamber of Deputies had already approved the bill. It needs only presidential signature to become law.
