Supreme Court rules on De Camps case

The Supreme Court of Justice rejected the petition placed by Hatuey de Camps, the ousted president of the PRD against a resolution of the chamber of disputes of the Central Electoral Board (JCE). The resolution had accepted the forced removal of De Camps from the presidency of the PRD. De Camps had opposed the bid for reelection by former President Hipolito Mejia. The then President finagled so that the PRD majority congress, with the support of the PRSC legislators, approved the modification of the Constitution months before the election to enable him to run for reelection. The Supreme Court ruled that decisions of the Central Electoral Board, the electoral court, are irrevocable in electoral matters.

The Supreme Court opinion puts an end to the dispute over the control of the PRD. De Camps had requested the revoking of Resolution 0113-03 dated 23 December 2003 of the JCE chamber of disputes that determined that the assembly of the PRD that chose Vicente Sanchez Baret as president of the PRD and former President Mejia as presidential candidate was valid.
